In 2011 two parchment fragments with ancient musical notation were discovered in the Weissenfels municipal archive, which could have come from the local St. Claren Monastery. The pages contain hymns for the Passion. By means of comparative research, it was possible to establish parallels to the famous contemporaneous Naumburg Choir Books, and in that way to reconstruct the missing parts. The songs are heard on the present recording for the first time in 500 years in their liturgical context and thus provide us with a glimpse into the sound of a Central German monastery on the eve of the Reformation.
The montalbâne Ensemble explores the rich spectrum of occidental music of the Middle Ages and combines it with traditional European vocal styles. The ensemble is holder of the “Romanesque Prize” in gold from the Tourism Network Saxony-Anhalt. www.montalbane.de
