One distinctive feature of this CD is its incomparable concert atmosphere, recorded as it was live during a concert in Meissen Cathedral. Moreover, it captures a performance by the singers and musicians attaining the very heights of technical perfection. From the opening notes to the very last tone, the listener is gripped by the sheer musicality of the performance, by the unrestricted ecstasy of the polyphonic harmony singing, and the exceedingly sensuous interpretation of the solo parts. The acoustics of Meissen Cathedral are reminiscent of the overwhelming fullness of sound inside St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice, where Monteverdi was the director of music until his death and where he doubtless also performed his Vespers to the Virgin Mary.

Le présent enregistrement se caractérise par l’incomparable atmosphère de concert qui se dégage de la prise en son direct d’une représentation dans la cathédrale de Meißen - et qui va de pair avec la parfaite maîtrise technique et la brillance musicale des chanteurs et musiciens. De la première à la dernière note, on est captivé par la puissance musicale de l’exécution, par ces mouvements polyphoniques infiniment extatiques et par l’extrême sensibilité de la présentation des pièces solistes. L’acoustique de la cathédrale de Meißen évoque la grandiose sonorité de la basilique Saint-Marc à Venise, dont Montervedi fut le maître de chapelle jusqu’à sa mort, et où il est probable que furent aussi représentées ses Vêpres de la Sainte-Vierge.
