The tiny piccolo, that scintillating, headstrong sprite among the orchestral instruments, is in the spotlight on this new Talaton CD. The second solo CD of Gudrun Hinze, piccoloist of the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester and internationally acclaimed for her mastery of the instrument, this recording includes the world premiere recordings of three pieces, performed with Gewandhausorchester and MDR Sinfonieorchester colleagues along with the pianist Markus Zugehör. The concerto by Australian composer Barry McKimm is particularly rich in color, with the Celtic quality of the piccolo, harp and bodhrán together lending the greater portion of the CD its special flair. In an example of well-rounded programming, this is followed by the gentle, filigree character of the sonatine by Giverny and the virtuosi c piece “Flash!” by Daniel Dorff, while the subsequent work, “Noble Tafelmusik,” by Robert Delanoff, is reminiscent of the folklore of Asia Minor. The Vivaldi Concerto in A Minor, brilliantly played in all its penetrating virtuosity, provides a balanced and satisfying finish to this excellent recording.
