“Wie lebt a jid?” was the normal greeting when two East European Jews met. And if the person so addressed muttered “Der alte nign”, there was probably little point in asking further, for the situation at home or in the country was somewhere between bad and very bad. In a nutshell, it was the same old story. Although mainly taken from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s (such as songs by Mordechai Gebirtig and Itzig Manger), all in all this small selection covers more than a century, including as it does music whose roots are to be found in once widespread religious songs.
«Wie lebt a jid?» («Comment vit un jid?») se demandaient deux Juifs de l’Est lorsqu’ils se rencontraient. Et si celui qui se trouvait ainsi salué marmonnait «Der alte nign...» («Toujours la même chanson...»), alors son interlocuteur pouvait s’épargner toute question supplémentaire. Les choses, à la maison ou au pays, étaient une nouvelle fois graves, voire très graves. En un mot: toujours le même refrain. Bien qu’essentiellement composé de morceaux des années 20 à 40 de ce siècle (tels que des chants de Mordechai Gebirtig et Itzig Manger), la présente sélection embrasse, en définitive, plus d’un siècle de musique – à travers des titres se rattachant à des chants religieux autrefois très répandus.

Jalda Rebling born: in 1951 in Amsterdam ¶ 1969–72 student at the Staatliche Schauspielschule (National Drama School), Berlin ¶ 1972–78 engagements at theatres in Berlin, Altenburg, Chemnitz and Dresden ¶ since 1978 freelance actress in Berlin ¶ 1979–88 performed Yiddish songs together with her parents Lin Jaldati and Eberhard Rebling, making guest appearances in many European countries as well as in Israel and the USA (until her mother’s death in 1988)
Jalda Rebling née en 1951 à Amsterdam ¶ 1969–72 études à la Staatliche Schauspielschule de Berlin (Ecole des Arts Dramatiques) ¶ 1972–78 Engagements à Berlin, Altenbourg, Chemnitz et Dresde ¶ depuis 1978 actrice indépendante à Berlin ¶ 1979–88 Les parents, Lin Jaldati et Eberhard Rebling, donnent, avec leurs filles, des concerts de chansons en yiddish dans de nombreux pays européens, l’Israël et aux Etats Unis, et ce, jusqu’à la mort de la mère en 1988.
