“Coming Home for Christmas” – to finally arrive home, out of the bone-chilling cold, after the church service in St. Thomas’, and to celebrate Christmas with the family: the five former members of the St. Thomas Boys Choir know this desire from their childhood.
Today, too, the internationally sought-after ensemble is on the road most of the year, on tour. In 2011 amarcord could be experienced for the first time in Africa, and also in the USA, France, Greece, the Netherlands, and Italy.
From the many trips to nearly all the corners of the world, the singers have again and again brought songs home with them. A selection of these is featured on the new CD. And the sounds of the songs are just as diverse as the personalities and preferences of the singers. Sometimes they are reminiscent of a quiet pop ballad, then of a Christmas sleigh-ride in deep snow. To be found here are hot African rhythms as well as contemplative and touching melodies. Götz Alsmann could not resist the sweet fragrances of the pastry shop and contributed a bonus track. The singers shift effortlessly from classical harmonies to groovy beats. But, of course, everything under the special hallmark of amarcord: the blended, always balanced, and yet diversified ensemble timbre that on this CD can also sound like Take 6 and Bobby McFerrin. Responsible for this is not least Bill Hare, the Grammy-Award winner and today’s leading sound craftsman for the international a cappella scene, who put the finishing touches on this album too.

« Coming Home for Christmas » - comme les cinq chanteurs d’amarcord la connaissent bien cette nostalgie, déjà depuis leurs jeunes années passées dans le chœur d’enfants de l’église Saint Thomas de Leipzig. Aujourd’hui encore, l’ensemble vocal, si demandé sur la scène internationale, est en tournée une grande partie de l’année. amarcord a chanté cette année pour la première fois en Afrique, mais aussi aux USA, en France, en Grèce, aux Pays-Bas et en Italie.
De leurs nombreux voyages dans tous les coins de cette terre, nos chanteurs ont régulièrement rapporté des chants dans leurs bagages. On peut retrouver un choix de ces trésors sur leur nouveau CD. Et le son des chants est aussi différent que les caractères et les préférences des chanteurs. L’un d’entre eux rappelle une ballade populaire tranquille, l’autre une descente en luge dans la neige profonde, un soir de Noël. On y trouve aussi bien des rythmes chauds africains que des mélodies pensives et touchantes. Götz Alsmann n’a pu échapper aux bonnes odeurs sucrées des pâtisseries de Noël et participa au projet avec un morceau en bonus.
Sans efforts, les chanteurs alternent entre chant classique et beat groove. Naturellement, le tout sous le label particulier d’amarcord : un son d’ensemble mélangé, équilibré et cependant très varié, ce CD pourra parfois résonner en écho à Take 6 ou Bobby McFerrin. Et Bill Hare n’y est sûrement pas pour rien. Le lauréat du Grammy et l’inventeur du son actuellement à la tête de la scène internationale a-cappella a apporté à l’album sa dernière touche.
