The ensemble, which performs with supernatural purity, uses the hall of the monastery church in Knechtstedten for an unusually calm, timeless interpretation.
More than two centuries lie between the lives of the two women presented on this CD. The parallels between Birgitta's life and that of Hildegard are already evident in their noble origins and visions. All pieces are taken from Hildegard's Symphonia harmoniæ cælestium revelationum or Birgitta's Cantus Sororum. With the exception of only three songs on this recording, they are hymns of praise to Mary. Both of them wrote exclusively monophonic songs, but our approach to this recording allows a freer interpretation: from polyphony to drones to pure monophony. The number of singers varies from piece to piece; many are accompanied by flute and/or fiddle. Our recording also contains instrumental arrangements of four antiphons, which, starting from the vocal original, become independent in different ways.
