David Timm was born in 1969 in the town of Waren on Lake Müritz, north-eastern Germany. He joined St. Thomas’s Church Choir in Leipzig, eventually becoming its First Prefect. From 1989 until 1995 he studied church music at Leipzig College of Music, including under Hannes Kästner and Arvid Gast (organ), as well as Volker Bräutigam (improvisation). He followed up his A-examinations in church music with a master classes in the piano under Markus Tomas in Leipzig, and also completed a period of study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under Karl-Heinz Kämmerling.
David Timm won first prize at the 1991 Weimar Piano Improvisation Competition, the 1st Bach Organ Improvisation Competition in Weimar in 1997, and the V International Organ Improvisation Competition in Schwäbisch Gmünd. In 1998 he was awarded the Leipzig Young Musicians’ Grant.
In the 1998 autumn semester he began teaching choral conducting at the College of Church Music in Halle, as well as organ improvisation at the College of Music and Theatre in Leipzig.

De 1989 à 1995, il a étudié la musique d’église à l’École Supérieure de Musique de Leipzig, notamment auprès de Hannes Kästner, Arvid Gast (orgue) et Volker Bräutigam (improvisation). îÀ l’issue de son examen de sortie, auquel il obtient la note maximale, David Timm a poursuivi sa formation par une classe de maître en piano auprès de Markus Tomas à Leipzig, ainsi que par un séjour d’étude au Mozarteum de Salzbourg, auprès de Karl-Heinz Kämmerling.
David Timm a obtenu le Premier Prix au Concours d’improvisation au piano de Weimar en 1991, au premier Concours Bach d’improvisation à l’orgue à Weimar (1997), ainsi qu’au Ve Concours international d’improvisation à l’orgue de Schwäbisch Gmünd. Il a également été récompensé en 1998 par la bourse de la ville de Leipzig.
Depuis l’automne 1998, il enseigne la direction de chœur à l’École Supérieure de Musique d’Église de Halle, ainsi que l’improvisation à l’orgue à l’École Supérieure de Musique et d’Art Dramatique de Leipzig.
