« Ce qui, dès le départ, m’a enthousiasmé dans les instruments à percussion, c’est cette possibilité fantastique, quel que soit l’endroit où l’on se trouve, d’avoir immédiatement un dénominateur commun avec d’autres musiciens. En Hongrie, à un mariage tzigane, on reçoit une cruche à lait, ou, en Espagne, une caisse de bois - et c’est parti !
C’est partout la même chose - comme une langue universelle du rythme. Voilà, et c’est justement ce qui est fascinant.

Interview (1992)
Michael Metzler was born in Leipzig. He studied percussion at Leipzig College of Music, where he took courses and his final examination under Hermann Naehring, Berlin. He subsequently specialised in ethnic percussion, working with Ahmed Subhy in Cairo and Glen Velez in New York. He has made numerous CD, radio and television recordings and given guest performances in Europe, Asia and America with ensembles such as Ioculatores, Les haulz et les bas, The Harp Consort, Svargød and others.
Michael Metzler est né à Leipzig (Allemagne). Il a étudié la musique dans la classe de percussions de l’École Supérieure de musique de Leipzig, et poursuivi sa formation et obtenu son diplôme auprès d’Hermann Nachring à Berlin, avant de suivre une spécialisation en percussions ethniques auprès d’Ahmed Subhy, au Caire, et de Glen Velez à New York. Il a réalisé un grand nombre d’enregistrements sur disque, à la radio ou à la télévision, et s’est produit en Europe, en Asie et en Amérique avec les ensembles Ioculatores, Les haulz et les bas, The Harp Consort, Svargød, entre autres. Depuis 1997, Michael Metzler enseigne la percussion médiévale à la Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (Suisse).
