The modern age would be unimaginable without conserved music. We are constantly bombarded by sound from a variety of different media, not to mention the radio. Man has always tried to capture the fleeting phenomenon that is music. Old writings from the antique world report on artificial singing birds and automatic organs, which were driven by water-powered mechanisms. Some of these instruments have survived, such as musical cabinets containing organs dating back to the 18th century, musical steel tongues on a clockwork ­cylinder from the early 19th century, and compositions on piano rolls by noted composers such as Debussy, Grieg, Mahler and Reger for the player-piano from the beginning of the 20th century.
Yet this CD is more than just a series of ‘performances’ by musical machines from the museum. Interaction with texts by Bobrowski produces a situation reminiscent of a radio play, creating a fascinating atmosphere.

À notre époque, l’absence de conservation de la musique n’est plus imaginable, submergés que nous sommes par la profusion des enregistrements ou par la radio. De tout temps, l’homme s’est efforcé de retenir »la musique qui passe», fugitive. Des écrits de l’antiquité rapportent l’existence d’oiseaux chantants artificiels, ou d’orgues jouant tous seuls actionnés par des mécanismes hydrauliques. Nous sont parvenus notamment des meubles musicaux pourvus d’ouvrages d’orgues du 18ème siècle, des anches métalliques, contenues dans des horloges à cylindres, du début du 19ème siècle, ou encore des rouleaux de partition gravés, au début du siècle, par des compositeurs aussi importants que Debussy, Grieg, Mahler ou Reger, notamment, pour »piano de reproduction». Mais ce CD n’a pas cependant pour but de se limiter à juxtaposer, d’une manière muséale, des automates musicaux. L’apport de textes de Bobrowski, venant se mêler à la musique, provoque une situation qui se rapproche de celle d’une pièce radiophonique, et réussit à créer une atmosphère fascinante.
