The term “stylus phantasticus,” which was coined in the eighteenth century, describes a free kind of composing that was exempted “from all compulsion,” such as melody and meter. On her debut CD, the young harpsichordist Magdalena Hasibeder has dedicated herself to the typical genres of this free music, such as the toccata, prelude, and fantasia, which were only subject to harmonic rules.
Impressive is the volume of sound that her harpsichord (Matthias Kramer, after a Hamburg model, ca. 1750) produces with its 16’ stop. For a long time, this unusual type of harpsichord was forgotten, yet even Johann Sebastian Bach regarded it highly on account of its tonal diversity, which
Magdalena Hasibeder fathoms with perfection and intimacy on this CD in works by Buxtehude, Böhm, Weckmann, and the two famous Bach sons.
