The term “stylus phantasticus,” which was coined in the eighteenth century, describes a free kind of composing that was exempted “from all compulsion,” such as melody and meter. On her debut CD, the young harpsichordist Magdalena Hasibeder has dedicated herself to the typical genres of this free music, such as the toccata, prelude, and fantasia, which were only subject to harmonic rules.
