The King’s Christmas
Weihnachten am Hof der englischen Könige
Noël à la cour des rois anglais
Barocktrompeten Ensemble Berlin
Johann Plietzsch
With drums beating and trumpets sounding, the Baroque Trumpet Ensemble Berlin lets the English Christmas shine, carried by trombones, theorbos, and organ. The ensemble, under the direction of Johann Plietzsch, contrasts the courtly sonic splendor in the music of Byrd and Purcell with a Christmas of contemplation and reflection. The Elizabethan antiphons and consort pieces are sparingly scored with lutes or a few winds. Precisely this alternation of brilliance and introspection makes “The King’s Christmas” so touching.
