The point of departure for the wonderfully virtuoso Baroque violin music to be heard on this recording lies not in Rome, Venice, or Naples, but at the court of Modena. Into the eighteenth century the court was maintained by the influential d’Este family, who attracted influential musicians from throughout Italy, including Marco Uccellini and Giovanni Battista Vitali with their very expressive style, Guiseppe Colombi who wrote numerous dance pieces for the Modenese court, Benedetto Ferrari, and Archangelo Corelli.
Björn Colell and Georg Kallweit (concertmaster and soloist of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin) have dedicated themselves, as Ensemble Ombra et Luce, to this inexhaustible abundance of first-class chamber music for their small duo formation. The clear, cantabile tone of the Baroque violin and the colorful harmonies of the theorbo develop an undreamt-of dynamic spectrum and a wealth of tonal nuances.
