Musik der Hamburger Pfeffersäcke
Music of Hamburg’s Moneybags
Musique pour les riches marchands de Hambourg
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767)

Reinhard Keiser (1674 – 1739)
Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra
Yeree Suh – Sopran
The term "Pfeffersäcke" (literally: "pepper sacks") was a somewhat derogatory name for the merchants who dealt in spices, and who provided the financial support for the arts in Hamburg. The performances of Telemann, Handel, and Reinhard Keiser on this CD, to which the young Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra devoted itself with a lively joy of playing and baroque lightness, also benefited from the money of the merchants.
City on the Elbe = ELBIPOLIS. Or as it is so aptly said about Hamburg: The Gateway to the World. A Baroque orchestra at the gateway to the world, this is how “Elbipolis” sees itself. With local roots and a passion for their own musical history, but with open ears, eyes, and hearts for the rest of the world, and always ready to go on a musical voyage of discovery.
The premiere CD “Don Quichotte in Hamburg,” with music by Telemann, Mattheson, and Conti (RAUMKLANG, 2005), was received with great acclaim. On this CD, the timbre of the Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra Hamburg is enriched by the voice of the renowned soprano Yeree Suh.
