Why it is good to hear the old songs anew
When the snow flakes, quietly falling, accumulate on the window, the bells sweetly ring, and the lights burn on the tree, it is – so the songs tell us – Christmas. Normally, we hear Advent and Christmas songs as a sonic backdrop at the Christmas market or in the bargain basement of the department store. The selling strategy here is: flaccid melodies. By St. Nicholas’ Day we’ve already had more than enough of this background music.
On the new Raumklang CD “Light of the Angels and Shadow of the Thorns,” with nineteen selected Christmas songs, one can and must listen. The for the most part well-known songs sound strangely new to us. In that Christine Maria Rembeck listens to their inner voices, changes the melodies ever so slightly, picks out individual passages of text, and interprets them anew through her own piano accompaniment. Christine Maria Rembeck’s singing touches us like that of an angel, embedded in the piano’s broad tonal spectrum and complemented by Emilia Gliozzi’s warm cello and celesta sounds.
