Inspired by the timeless beauty and spiritual power of
Gregorian chant, four musicians embarked on a new project, the creation of ensemble nu:n.
Rebecca Bain and
Katherine Hill, renowned interpreters of medieval music, provide the foundations for the project, bringing liturgical song from medieval manuscripts back to life. Jazz musicians
Gert Anklam (saxophones) and
Falk Zenker (guitar) transform the historical material into an engaging synthesis of archaic and modern sounds. The use of medieval and contemporary improvisation techniques serves to remove the songs from their original context; live samples are electronically duplicated throughout the former monastery church of Pforta, expanding its boundaries. Past and present come together during the singular moment of improvisation, the instant for which the ensemble is named, borrowing the German term "nun" (the present moment) from the writings of 14th century mystic
Meister Eckhart.
