Seine Konzerttätigkeit führte ihn auf zahlreiche internationale Festivals (u.a. in Boston, Brügge, New York, Tel Aviv).
The origins of the chaconne as a dance melody can be traced to Latin America; Both humorous and obscene in style, the chaconne was accompanied by guitar and percussion. The terms «chacona» and «vida bona» (=good life) recur throughout the refrains of the majority of texts extant today. The dance rapidly spread throughout Spain and Italy. Alessandro Piccinini, a contemporary of Monteverdi and Frescobaldi, received lute instruction with his siblings from his father. In 1623, after a long period of preparation, he published his first work «Intavolatura di Liuto et di Chitarrone, libro primo». This book contained a detailed introduction with notes on playing technique, aspects of the instruments and various pieces for lute, which Axel Wolf has been chosen for this CD: toccatas, chiacconas, dances such as the gagliarde and corrente, or by sets of variations, on the romanesca and the alemana. For the continuo, Axel Wolf selected a chest organ with wooden pipes, a violone, guitar and percussion. The playing technique of the «chitarra spagnola» brings out the rhythmic element of each piece and can be heard today in the living tradition of flamenco guitarists.
Axel Wolf studied guitar and lute under Hans Michael Koch. After attending master classes held by Nigel North and Hopkinson Smith, he also studied under Rolf Lislevand. In 1988 he teamed up with Simone Nill (recorder) and Robert Sagasser (viola da gamba) to form the ensemble La Sfondrata. Four years later, La Sfondrata won a prize at the Festival of Early Music in Utrecht. Axel Wolf played the lute in a number of well-known ensembles such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, Musica Fiata (Cologne), Ars Antiqua Austria, and the London-based Gabrieli Consort & Players. Axel Wolf has appeared at numerous international festivals, including in Boston, Bruges, New York and Tel Aviv. Axel Wolf is a frequent guest at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, performing under the baton of Harry Bicket and Ivor Bolton. He has also worked with conductors such as Peter Schreier, Paul McCreesh, Lajos Rovatkay and Joshua Rifkin on opera, concert and CD productions. From 1986 to 2003, Axel Wolf taught at the Hanover School of Music and Theatre.
