The term ‘lesser master’ is not one likely to induce fairness. After all, ‘lesser master’ have always been regarded as also-rans meriting little more than a footnote in musical history – as minor figures of no epochmaking import. Anyone listening with an open mind to these sonata recordings will quickly realise that Dutch cellist and composer Jacob Klein is clearly one of those cheated of their honour.
The Sonatas for Cello and Continuo, which were dusted down and liberated from the archives just a few years ago by Dutch cellist and musicologist Frank Wakelkamp, were published in 1746 as the Opera Quarta by the influential Amsterdam publisher Witvogel. It is apparent that Klein`s Opera Quarta was influenced by maestro Pietro Locatelli. Klein«s boldness went far beyond simple imitation, and chiefly consisted in attempting to transfer the expressive, virtuoso and somewhat self-important gestures of the concertante style of Italian provenance to the genre of the chamber sonata. Kristin von der Goltz has venture on the work of Jacob Klein, whish is distinguished by remarkably innovative performance technique. Portamento coupled with lengthy double stop passages with daredevil ornamention.
Kristin von der Goltz joined the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra in 1991, since when she has performed all over the world with the ensemble and appeared on diverse CD recordings. While taking private tuition with William Pleeth in London she played with ensembles such as the London Philharmonic, New Philharmonia London and the Hanover Band. As a soloist she nowadays performs on both the modern and the baroque cello. She is much in demand internationally as a solo cellist – for instance in Ponelle’s 1998 production of Mozart’s Lucio Silla at Zurich Opera House conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Since 1999 Kristin von der Goltz has taught modern and historical cello on a number of occasions at the International Bohemia Festival in Prague. In 2003 she began teaching the baroque cello at Munich Academy of Music.
